Ironman Hawaii

I've been slacking on writing a race report, i wanted to wait till i got home to take a look at my power numbers from the bike and get some other pictures scanned in, but here's a short version.

Woke up early on race day as usual, got 800 calories of protein shake in at 2 am, cereal at 4am, ran out the door and forgot my egg burrito, oops. Got down to the race site, still dark, really crowded, could feel the nervousness in the air.

Pretty much just sat around, waited in line for the porta potty(they only had 21 porta potties for 1800 athletes, that was crazy wrong). Had a bottle of gatorade and some gu to try and get the calories i missed from forgetting my breakfast. Overall things felt normal, certainly nervous.

The pros started at 6:45, the rest of us waded in, i treaded water for about 10 minutes near the front until the canon went off; finally. It was typical mayhem, no better no worse than other races, except it just never let up. The swim felt like it took forever, i felt like i was swimming really hard, as hard as i could, certainly felt faster than my time showed, but this course tends to produce slower times.. I came out of the water at : 1:06:38

T2 was packed, i changed on the side and picked up my bike.. The bike course, wow, the bike course. This course is anything but flat, but thats not what makes this course so difficult, its the conditions.. Hot, Humid, and Windy, and Windy, and Windy. I usually give myself about 30 minutes to settle down, but things weren't feeling quite right, i had some major stomach cramps which i attributed to salt water, and my heart rate was elevated 10-15beats for the power level i was at and wasn't coming down, something didn't quite feel right. We had a tail wind out of town so speeds were pretty fast in general, but it got hot fast. Within an hour i noticed my shorts were already covered with salt deposits, never seen it happen that early in a race. I decide to up my salt intake, drink as much as i can, and drop my power level 5-10watts to try and get myself normal(i never really made it). The climb to hawi starts around 42 miles or so, this is where it got really tough. The cross winds are legendary there and this day was no exception. There were a few points were i thought i was going to lose control of my bike, it was kinda scary. The pros were coming back and they were all over the road too, it was brutal.. It was in the high 80's at this point and the wind was crazy, i was happy to make the turn around at Hawi, but nervous about hitting the crosswinds again. More of the same, scary yet again, i was happy to finish that out and back and still be alive, really, i was happy to still be on my bike. the last 40 miles back to Kona was brutally hot, these are all rollers thru the lava fields, everything is black so the heat off the road is probably 10-20degrees hotter than the air temp. I could feel myself baking and wondering if i'd be able to make it back, i just couldn't drink enough. I finally made it back into town, thankful to be done on the bike. I can't stress how hard this bike ride is, the wind and the heat are unbearable, and down right dangerous, it is crazy crazy hard. My bike time ended up being about where i expected given the slightly reduced effort. Bike Time 5:27:06

As i was running thru transition, i noticed my feet were really sore, as i got into the tent, i found my toes had blistered on the bike.. What, blistered on the bike? Yep, the intense heat of the road caused my feet to swell in my bike shoes and ended up giving me some blisters.. I took some extra time in this transition to vaseline my toes and comfortably put on my shoes, oh yeh, it was friggen HOT.

The marathon alway hurts, today would be no exception, for whatever reason things weren't going my way and i knew it was going to be a long run, i walked the aid stations right from the beginning, taking in as much fluid, salts, coke as i could, hoping it would get me thru. The first 10 miles or so were just ok, nothing fast, but i at least was running in between aid stations. Then the wheels began to fall off. I was just plain hurtin, it was hot, i was completely soaked, there was just no way to cool off, not even walking helped much. Seeing my family was certainly uplifting, but it just wasn't enough.. You enter the energy labs around 18, at that point i was beginning to get dizzy, this is a really bad sign things are going bad. From then out i was more concerned about staying upright, so i started walking more and more.. Mile 20-25 was all walking, i managed to "jog" the last mile or so into town, just had too. This ended up being my second slowest marathon time ever, but still not too bad considering how much i had walked: Run Time: 4:29:53

Overall Time: 11:13:33

Even though i had a bad day, it was still very special, its hard to explain how that last 1/4 mile on Alii drive felt. So many things come to mind, sure its the end of an incredibly long day, but also the end of an incredibly long journey. All the hours i've trained, the hours i've thought about it, the personal and family sacrifices given over the years, and so much more, all to enable me the opportunity to run that last 1/4 mile on alii drive. I've seen it on tv hundreds of times and no tv production can do it justice. My head was clogged with emotions, i just wish it could have lasted longer. I can't really describe how it feels to accomplish something i've been striving for for so very long, so i won't. Simply put, it was amazing.

1 Day out:
Sorry i haven't posted in a couple days, things have been busy.. Was glad to hear my sister Leslie and her daughter Amy were coming out, unfortunately it sounds like they're stranded on oahu and won't make it over here, bummer..
Yesterday lucas and i did the underwear run, he's been looking forward to it for months. This "run" is a blast and perfect to ease the pre race tension. I "raced" conservative, even though Paul A. gave me some really "nice" running gear, maybe next time.. Will try and get some video up later, here are a few pics.

Went for a ride after, got a flat on my 100.00 tire, then broke my rear carbon water bottle mount. Everything is fixed and ready to go now, hoping thats now out of the way.

Went to the pre-race carbo meal last night, wow, it was absolutely amazing. Certainly well above any other ironman production for sure, it was cool..

The family at the pre-race dinner

Bike and gear bag check in later today, will post again tonight...

4 days out:
Went swimming this morning, saw Chris McCormick and company at the beach. He's a bit taller than i was expecting, and super super dark. Seemed like a nice guy. Swam for 20 minutes so it was short, ran 4 miles after, easy. I think i'm slowly acclimating to the weather, its still hot though, too hot. Kona is all about ironman, they have an official ironman hawaii merchandise store open year round, i even found this sign on the street:
There was a kids splash and dash, lucas can't really swim, but we did it anyway. 50 yard swim and about a 1/4 mile run, he loved it.. Chris McCormack and Chris Lieto both were there swimming and helping a couple little kids.. It was pretty cool to see them there, No germans though.. Here's lucas after his race with his metal, he was pretty happy..

A also checked in and picked up my race material today, #924. Also spent a fortune on Ironman Hawaii gear, i usually stay away from these places, but not for this race, i'm sure i'll spend more over the next few days..

We stayed downtown for the parade of Nations, it was actually pretty cool and pretty fun, glad we saw it. Lucas got a ton of candy, which always makes his day.

Corrina and lucas both have been doing great, i'm amazed at how patient they've both been.. Its been great..

5 days out

Went swimming today, saw Norman Stadler at the swim with a swarm of cameras, saw him again at the bike shop a couple hours later, i think he's stalking me, keeping track of the compeition i presume.. Rode 36 miles today, rode the climb to Hawi, and yes, it was indeed a climb, and the winds were every bit as brutal as i've heard about. I saw the wind farm about 4 miles out of Hawi, yeh, this is wyoming in the ocean..

After the ride the family drove up to Hawi and had some local mexican food, which was really good, and some killer ice cream.. Cool little town..

Kona is really getting crowded, fit and fast come to mind. The bike ride today felt like a race there were so many people out on the course. Corrina and lucas are doing great, they went swimming in the ocean while i was riding today, lucas loved it.. Till tomorrow..

6 days out

We've now been here for 1.5 days.. Today was a good day. Went swimming this morning, the water makes up for the overly boring bike course.. It was the clearest water i've seen, very active bottom, kind of like snorkeling, except your swimming. Water temperature was about perfect, not too cold, and not too hot.. Was a bit busy, but not too bad..

I went for an hour run after swimming, all i can say is it was hot and humid. I was completely wet after about 10 minutes, the run will be interesting for me.. I understand why this race is so hard, certainly not the terrain, its the heat. I have noticed the men just are not friendly, but the women are.. Its hard to even get a smile out of any of the droves of men running the course, its crazy. Getting busy.. One thing thats really cool is a gatorade stop thats been stocked everyday with cold gatorade for people training, its right outside our condo. Here's lucas taking advantage of it:

Our place has a sea water pool right be the ocean, its sweet, lucas loved it..

Lastly, we had dinner with my parents at a place called hugos, food was ok, atmosphere was perfect, right on the ocean..

Plan to swim tomorrow, then drive up and ride the 20 miles before Hawi, then back. Did i mention it was hot??

7 days out, Saturday

Yep, Day 1, just got in.. Flight went well, lucas and corrina were superstars.. We pull up and who do we see, the lovatos, haven't really met them before.. chatted a bit, noticed a few bags of pork rinds in their grocery bags, hmmm, maybe i'll try that this week.. Saw them on the way out to ride, pointed at my legs and asked michael if he was scared of these bad boys, he laughed, but said he's scared of everyone's legs.. Yeh, i'm intimidating his ass... :)

Got a 50 mile ride in, man what a gorgeous place, i think this is probably the most beautiful race ride i've ever done(ok sarcasm in there), but damn, its friggen hot, i mean oppressive heat. Diana Hassel took me out on the course for the ride, damn its hot. I'm sweatin thinking about it.. Here's one of the beautiful spots on the bike course, they were really thinking when they put pavement down, make it black so it blends in with the surroundings, yeh, wouldn't want the wild life know there was a road right thru their habitat.. Did i say how hot it was??

Training Summary Sep22 - sep 28

Training Summary Sep. 22 - Sep 28
Training time finally starting to drop, nothing too big this week, Friday was a Race Rehearsal ride.. Overall things feel pretty good. I think i'm ready, well, except for the sciatica which is going to bother me to the end.. :(

Planned time 12:40 Actual time 14:00 Totals: S: 10800y B: 140m R: 30

Monday: S:4500y R: 4m
R: was supposed to do mile repeats, sciatica really flared and hurt too much to run fast. bagged them and quit early

Tuesday: B: 26; R: 4m Nothing crazy here

Wed: S: 4500y R: 16m 7:37 pace
R: since this was a "short" run, i let myself go to town. Ended up 7:37 pace, last 6 miles under 7:15.. Felt good for the most part, except the butt of course.. Very happy about the run..

Thur: S: 1800y easy fun swim

Fri: B: 113m ; R: 6 miles
B: Race rehearsal (FT=284W)
113 miles 5:23:50.. TSS 282, Pnorm=205W
0-56 miles, TSS= 144, Pnorm=209W
57-112miles, TSS=138, Pnorm=201W
R: 6 miles

The goal here was to ride 205-210W first half, 210-215 second half. the second half of this route is tough, lots of climbing, hard to hit that right. Overall good, would like a TSS closer to 300.. The run felt great.. I love RR rides, they feel like recovery compared to the rest of the long rides i do... Feeling really good...
